Week Two Question

Hi Students,

This week's question comes from Hussah with a slight revision from me. Our deadline for responding will typically be Friday, 3 pm for each week's question.

Here is the question:

What are popular blogs in your community or among your friends? What do people usually write about?  Are these blogs more similar to those described in Reading 1 or those described in Reading 2? How?

I look forward to reading your responses! Happy writing!

  1. In Japan, most of famous people have their personal blog. They write about anything for example, their daily lives, pets, and plans for next work. Japanese like to read their blogs as you read in the article 3. Then we can know what famous people are doing now. I think Japanese want to feel closure with them.

    1. Hi Keisuke,

I had no idea that famous people did this in Japan. I can imagine that famous people have readers who follow each and every post with enthusiastic anticipation. This is something that hasn't quite caught on here in the U.S. as far as I know, but maybe it will someday.

On vocabulary: You use "closure" in your last sentence when I think you mean "closer."

  2. In South Korea, Cyworld and Facebook are popular among my freinds and in my office. They usually write their daily events, hobbies, and experiences of travel with photo as well as their job. Sometimes, before planning travel, people would search blogs, and they can get much information.

    1. Hi Kyeong A,

When I lived in Korea, I would read Korean fishing blogs all the time to find out clues about where the best fishing spots were. I also followed some of the online fishing communities; through these online forums, I learned a lot of valuable information that led me to some of the most distant, isolated valleys in Korea.

On verb phrases: Instead of "write their daily lives," you can say "write ABOUT their daily....."

  3. In Japan,Facebook is the most popular among people around me. I think Mixi take the second place. On both social media, people in Japan usually write about their daily lives such as what they did today or what they are going to do tomorrow like Keisuke and Kyeong A said. My friends, specifically girls, sometimes write about what is on their mind, too. These are the exact things that Article 2 on the textbook talk about. Like Keisuke said, it is getting common for famous people to have thier blogs so that the fan can know about thier private stuff.

    1. Hi Yuka,

As I told Keisuke, this idea of famous people writing about their lives really intrigues me. I think a lot of people here would love it if Hollywood stars, musicians, and famous athletes had blogs and wrote about their daily lives. It's interesting to hear you say that article 2 describes exactly what Japanese women actually do.

Your grammar in this response is practically perfect, but there is a small subject-agreement/article error: instead of "Mixi take the second place," you can say "mixi takeS second place" (no "the").

  4. Facebook is the most popular blog in the Philippines. Most of them use this website to post the special events in their life, such as; birthday, wedding, anniversary, reunion, and other special occasion. While others write their daily events, experiences, and post their photos. Facebook is very common to everyone because this is easiest way to share their expriences and ideas.

    1. Hi Alejandro,

It does not surprise me that Facebook takes top honors for most popular social media site in the Philippines. Do you have a Facebook account yet? I think I'm one of the only people in the world who doesn't do Facebook! I'm a little reluctant to put so much personal information on the internet, so I don't know if I'll ever open an account.

Here are two quick language tips: 1) instead of "write their daily events" you can say "write ABOUT their daily..." Also, after "such as" there is no punctuation: "....such as birthdays, weddings, ...."

  5. There is a blog for cooking called "Cook Pad" in Japan. If you have account of Cook Pad, you can post your recipe for dish. In addition, people can search recipe which other users posted even if you don't have account of this Cook Pad. I often use this web site when I cook my lunch or dinner.

    1. Hi Kan,

This sounds like a fascinating and useful blog. I've just now starting finding great recipes on cooking blogs. In fact, just last month we had a wild turkey to cook, and I had never cooked a turkey before. So I got on this great "western style" cooking blog and found an amazing recipe. It was so delicious!

On vocabulary phrases, we say "to have an account for" (not "account of"). You could also say "have an account with."

  6. Hi everyone,

In my country, there are only 10,000 thousand bloggers out of 29 million inhabitants in Saudi Arabia. However, Facebook, twitter and Youtube are the most popular. people usually love to express their view about the locals events and updated issues. In compared to the two articles in the book, Saudi users usually expressing their opinion and criticizing local issues. They also, love to share their feeling and experience using online forums , Facebook and twitter. In contrast, they rarely write about their daily lives because of the high level of privacy in our culture

    1. Hi Hussah,

It's interesting to learn that people in Saudi Arabia prefer to write about public or community issues rather than their personal lives. Fascinating cultural tidbit! In general, it sounds like there is a vibrant online community in Saudi Arabia.

On transitions of comparison: You say "In compared to the two articles" when you can simply say "Compared to the two articles...." (delete "in").

  7. In Spain Facebook and Twitter are the most use media in Internet, but the group of people that I know use more Facebook than Twitter, but the true is that not too much, but when someone writes something is not too much private, more pictures than another thing.
I have not met anybody that writes in a blog, I think that Spaniards in general are not too much interested in blogs; nevertheless the blogs that I´ve found are about sciences, traveling, place where eat or fashion. As in other countries young people use more these new media of communication than old people.
