Week 14 Blog Response

Hi Students,

This week, I'd like you to reflect on your experience at Hellgate High School. How was the experience for you overall? How did you feel? What did you learn? What were your expectations? How was the experience different from/the same as what you expected? What was beneficial about the experience? What did you like? Dislike? Finally, what question would you have asked if we had had more time to talk to the students?  Please write at least ten sentences in your response. Please be honest! Week 13 Ordinary People Online Discussion Activity

Hi students,

Unfortunately, we will not have class this Friday; thus, we are going to move our Ordinary People discussion online. More specifically, you will post your response to a specific chapter that has been assigned to you on the blog, and other students will respond to your post. You must post your response by Saturday, 5 pm. You will have until midnight on Sunday to respond to your classmates' responses. Here is a description of what you must include in your response:

1. In your opinion, what is the most important event that takes place in your chapter? Describe the event and explain why you chose it.

2. Describe an emotion from one of the characters in the chapter and explain why you think this character is feeling this way.

3. If you could change something in the chapter, what is one thing you would change? Why?  Be creative in your response!

**I highly recommend writing your response on Google Drive or Microsoft Word BEFORE posting it to the blog!

Week 11 Blog Question

Hi students,

This week's blog question comes from the preview questions at the beginning of the unit. Please write at least 10 sentences in your response, and don't forget to go back and edit your response (check for things likes grammar, spelling, punctuation, and spacing errors).

Unit 5 Preview Question

Look at the survey topics on p. 110. Choose the topic that you think has experienced the most success in terms of global cooperation and another topic that you think has seen the least amount of success. Explain why you chose each topic. That is, what do know about the topic that makes you think global cooperation HAS/HASN'T resulted in success?  Please write at least eight sentences in your response.

Josh's Paragraph on Work or Leisure Activity

       Tying flies may seem like an arduous task for many, but for me the evenings when I sit at the fly tying desk are full of nothing but pure contemplative pleasure. It's true that a lot of work and detail must go into the creation of a minuscule trout offering; the time needed to set everything up for a fly tying session can be quite a time-consuming process. But even this preliminary preparation period presents a much anticipated stage that I highly enjoy. The methodical steps needed to organize, prepare, and assemble the materials for each fly tying session provide a challenge that I continually look forward to. Each time I start the process anew, I ask myself how I can more efficiently set up for the night's hour or two of fly tying.  This task requires that I hone my skills by thinking of new ways to more quickly prepare all of the materials. I find great satisfaction in finding ways to eliminate an unnecessary steps, thereby simplifying the preparation process. Once all the materials have been prepared, I happily move on to the next step: tying flies! Not only is there beauty in the art of tying flies, but there is also creativity in the fashioning of both traditional and new patterns.  Looking at the bare hook, imagining the creature that will come to life on the small steel shank, and applying the materials in a methodical fashion necessitates both imagination and ingenuity.  The combination of the two allows the tyer to produce miniature masterpieces of original flies as well as new and innovative patterns that sometimes end up working even better than the originals. Holding a finished fly in the palm in my hand gives me a deep sense of contentedness.   Indeed, tying flies is simply one of life's more meditative pleasures. I would even posit that the process of tying flies is almost as satisfying as catching an actual fish on a fly that I have tied myself!

The authors of "laid-Back Labor" say that economists do not agree about the definition of leisure. After reading this article, how would you define work and leisure?  Use your own examples to support your opinion.
