Hi students,
Unfortunately, we will not have class this Friday; thus, we are going to move our Ordinary People discussion online. More specifically, you will post your response to a specific chapter that has been assigned to you on the blog, and other students will respond to your post. You must post your response by Saturday, 5 pm. You will have until midnight on Sunday to respond to your classmates' responses. Here is a description of what you must include in your response:
1. In your opinion, what is the most important event that takes place in your chapter? Describe the event and explain why you chose it.
2. Describe an emotion from one of the characters in the chapter and explain why you think this character is feeling this way.
3. If you could change something in the chapter, what is one thing you would change? Why? Be creative in your response!
**I highly recommend writing your response on Google Drive or Microsoft Word BEFORE posting it to the blog!
Please let me know if you have any questions.

1. I think the most important event in Chapter 19 is the disputing about the advice of Ray for Cal and Cal’s family. On their way home, Cal and Ray stopped by the Carriage Grill to eat a sandwich. Cal said about his travel plan with Beth to Ray. Ray was worrying about Cal all the while, so Ray wanted to say his worry about Cal and Cal’s family. First, Ray pointed out that Cal is worrying about Con too much and long. Next, Ray felt there is something wrong between Cal and Beth. Ray advised Cal to care about Beth all the more. However, Cal didn’t want to listen to friend’s advice. So, the atmosphere was little serious. Cal and Ray are close friends for a long time, so Ray wanted to give advice from his heart. There is a everlasting friendship in this chapter.
ReplyDelete2. Cal is annoying Ray’s advice. Cal said as follow: Next time. Try for more directness. What are you supposed to tell me? However, Cal felt sorry for Ray.
3. If I could change the story, I would change the negative attitude of Cal toward Ray’s advice to the positive. In my story, Cal takes Ray’s advice seriously and makes a great effort to understand Beth. So, family’s problems are easily solved.
Hi Kyeong A, I think Ray's advice to Cal was most important, too. He was caring about his son Con too much, so her wife Beth wanted to talk with Cal more. By following this advice, I think the relationship among family become better and problem will be solved so he should have followed Ray.
DeleteDear K young A,
DeleteI agree with you. Cal must accept Ray's advice because he will never find caring friend like Ray. indeed, I was surprised that Cal get bothered. May be he dislike Ray's implying and he want him to be more direct. Yes, Ray gave a long advice as if he were giving a lecture. Listen Cal, your son will go way and will never come back as what my doughtier did. I think it was non of Cal's business to know about Nancy. In my opinion, Ray was so boring and painful to Cal. He tried to be wise, but he failed. In my life, I would never gave friends painful prediction. I disagree with Ray. Conrad might not go away because people are not the same. If this is the reasons why Cal get bothered, then I would do the same reaction. Cal is right.
Hi Kyeong A, I agree with you that this is the most important event in chapter 19, Because in our life it is realistic to take advice from our friend. However, it is important to think and decide whether the advice is good or not.
DeleteHi, I agree with all of you, maybe Cal thinks that his friend is not the most ideal person to give advice about marriage. Nevertheless, Ray is worried about Cal.
Delete1. I think that the most important event in the 23 chapter is when Conrad tells to his father the fight that he has had.
ReplyDelete2. Cal is not upset whith his son. He tries to justifiy Conrad telling that it is normal that sometimes young people have fights. I think that Cal does not want that his son fells guilty with the fight.
3. I would change the last part of the chapter which explain that the Conrad´s mother didn´t care that Conrad was sleeping on the coach, because the author tries that the readers think that Conrad´s mother is not worried about him.
Hi Salva. It was right for Cal to tell Conrad about the fight. Speaking of the things that Con was hiding about the fight, he had a guilty of it and he didn't make his father be afraid of it. As you said, Cal wasn't angry with his son. That's because he wanted his son suffer from stress any more and this was care for Con. At the end, Beth doesn't seem to care for Con. I think she should have communicated with her son to be in good relationship, too.
DeleteHi Salva,
DeleteYeah I think Cal is not upset with his son. In my opinion it is a good sign for Conrad that he learned to be worried about the others feelings. Because in this chapter Conrad shows that he is also worried about his father. He won't Cal to be worried with him.
CHAPTER 22:
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think the fighting between Conrad and Stillman is the most important event in Ch.22. Conrad was about to get into his car when Stillman teased him and got him mad when he hit him many times and said, “ you are the prick. Guys like you who walk around acting like you are King Shit gave me a **************”. At the same time, somebody was behind them was warning Conrad Saying” Cut it out” which means stop it. Conrad and Stillman beat each other and both of them were bleeding. I chose it because Conrad start to have normal feeling of anger and fight. He returned back to his normal high school behavior. In the past, Conrad be quiet when Stillman used to teasing him, but his reaction developed.
The main character in ch.22 is Conrad. Although he become confident and normal again, but he is still miss his brother. Conrad is still feel grieving when remembering Buck because Buck is the only partner he have ever known. As a result, neither Lazenby nor his friends can help him to forget. Nobody is be able to let him forget even jeanny Pratt ,his girl friend.
Stillman rude behavior and Conrad reaction to him. Conrad should have been more cautious about Stillman intention because he knew that he is dangerous. Conrad should have continued walking to his car ignoring Stillman calling. If Stillman continued calling and saying cross words to Conrad, Conrad should have stopped and acted differently. Why he should stop for a person who was teasing him all the time and be nice to him. Conrad should have been more angry and mad toward Stillman. Conrad should have said, “ What do you want. I don’t want to talk to you.Go away. Don’t touch me. keep your hand away.Hey, I am warning you.keep your hand away. Do you think I’ll be quiet while you have fun of me idiot. I am afraid that you’re wrong. if you don’t go from here. I will show who I am.”Stillman laugh and said,” Oh boy. Comeon, you can’t hurt even a cat. Show me what will you do”. Conrad couldn’t stand for it, so he beat and kicked Stillman for 15 minutes until he bleeded his nose and forehead. Stillman passed out, so he was transported to the hospital. Later on, the doctors discovered that there were Heroween substance in Stillman’blood, so they called his father momentarily. As a result, the father decided to get Stillman out of school and enrolled him in the military as a punishment. Stillman afraid because dislike military harsh training , so he called Conrad to apologize.
Hi Hussah,
DeleteI agree with your idea because this scene was the first time that Conrad presented his feeling clearly. His father must be worried and care about him at this time. I know Buck was the best person for Con because they were good brothers. I think good relationship among their family, friends and girlfriend Jeannie makes him nearly forget his sad memory about Buck.
He should have also stay calm and control his mind before hitting Stillman not to make people around him be worried about it.
The most important event in this chapter is the fight between Conrad and Stillman. Conrad goes to a swiming competition and when finishes he goes to the parking, there he finds Stillman who starts to insult him, then they have a fight.
DeleteChapter 20
ReplyDelete1.The most important event is that Conrad met Jeannie’s mother. Conrad is standing in front of Jeannie’s house to meet her mother. She was saying that her mother is strict so he was a little nervous to meet with her. When he rung the doorbell and the door opened, he saw the scene that he didn't expect. It was different from the impression that he thought. Her mother was smiling nicely and looked so kind. She also invited him to her house. At that time, Mike, who is friend with Jeannie, was there and she introduced him for Conrad. He said that he went out with Jeannie in the past. Moreover, he knew that she met with many guys besides him. In her house, he knew the new surprising facts about Jeannie like these things.
2.I’ll describe Conrad's feeling. When he knew the fact that Jeannie had been out with many guys, he was shocked, because he thought that he was the first person for her to go out with. He thought that she was what is called pure girl who has never been out with other guys, so it may be surprising thing for him. However, I think he could become to accept her situation, and he wants to keep good relationship with her at the same time.
3.I wanted Conrad to say what he really think to Jeannie. When he went out with her, he didn’t say that he loves her. He loved her for a long time but he didn’t say such a thing to her. By telling her his feeling, something could be changed and have deeper relationship with her.
Hi Rina,
DeleteIn fact, I don't think Miki is right about guys. Maybe he loves Jeanny and have feeling toward Conrad. Maybe he said that to keep Conrad away. The sign of this that her Mother is strict, so she wouldn't let her go with many guys. Another things is Jeanny is working and new in the town, so don't have many guys as what Micky claimed. To me, Jeanny isn't an easy girl.
Conrad has a date with Jennie, he goes to pick her up. Conrad knows Jennies mother, he is nervous. The date is good, Conrad looks confident during the date, finally they go to Mcdonalls and he says to her that he will call her.
DeleteHi Rina,
DeleteI agree with you that to talk with Jen's mother is one of the most exciting event in this chapter. However, it is normal for the teenager like Conrad to be nervous.
I think the most important event in chapter 21 is when Beth and Calvin are dicussing about their trip although they are dicided to go to golf tournament, and not to Europe. This is most exciting for me because Calvin shows that he has respect to Beth. However, in this chapter shows that Calvin is really sad because he thinks that they have problem with their relationship, he become sentimental by remembering the early days of their marriage, he remember their previous trip and the first day that he met Beth.If I could change something in this chapter. I would change the golf trip plan to trip to Europe because I think it is more interesting If Cal and Beth would refresh their happiest momment in their life.
ReplyDeleteHi Alejandro,
DeleteI agree with your idea. I think the travel to Europe would have been good oppotunity to have communication between Cal and Beth, but she declined his suggestion. The reason is that she wanted to care about his son Con and she may have wanted to stay with him. The best thing is that parents and their son stay together and have a conversation together. By doing so, the problems among their family can be solved and have good relationship with each other.
Hi Alejandro,
DeleteI agree with you this is the most exciting event. I think that both of them need to be direct with each other. There mustn't be something hidden. I also agree that they must go to Europe
The most important event is when Cal and Beth decide don´t travel to Europe and go to a golf tournment. They decide go to to the Cal´s sister in law house.
DeleteHi Masaya,
ReplyDeleteI think the fight between Con and Stillman is the most important thing in this chapter, too. The thing that he was worried about his punishment makes us notice his character clearly. He didn't have enough confidence. Moreover, if he don't think that Stillman is annoying person, he wouldn't get angry with him and there is no fight between them. You want to make Conrad hit Lazenby and I think this is interesting idea, but if so, Con's father would be afraid of his son more and more.
Hi Masaya,
ReplyDeleteI like your idea that you want Conrad to fight Lazenby. This will be more interesting and conplicated. However, the fight scene between Conrad and Stillman is important in this chapter because the author shows that Cal is more sensitve which is normal in the real life that the youth is more aggresive.
